Latin America
Stretching from the bitter northern reaches of Patagonia, with its wild winds and wood smoke, to the stifling shores of the Caribbean, these photos were taken in Central and South America.
I passed through Andean valleys, moonlike deserts, the Amazon rainforest and parched salt flats. I lived at the foot of a volcano, in the depths of the jungle, and on the swampy edge of a tiny island.
The people of Latin America are as diverse and wonderful as their surroundings. I met native Quechua, Aymara and Ngobe-Bugle, as well as Afro-Caribbeans, Afro-Ecuadorians and Latinos.
This photo album displays the vibrant colours and cultures of this amazing continent.
Africa
These photos were taken in the Rift Valley regions of Uganda and Ethiopia, astonishing destinations where hot springs and salt lakes burst through parched desert landscapes, gorillas prowl though the clouds in the highland forests, and the ground trembles to the rhythm of African drums.
Though I was welcomed by the people, I was more than aware that I was intruding on this landscape's real owners - the wildlife. Incredible creatures blocked the roads, bathed in the rivers, swooped through the blue skies and swung from the treetops.
Europe
Even after several years living in southern Europe, I was stunned by the beauty of its cities. The exquisite tiles, or azulejos, the wrought iron balconies, the wooden shutters, the streets so narrow I could reach out and touch both walls...
Many of these photos were taken in Lisbon, a fallen city where plants grow from the walls tiles loosen on the mosiac streets and dorrs hang off their hinges. But I found the decay beautiful.
This was a dramatic contrast with the shattered facades of an English seaside town, a bleak, windswept skeleton that once promised an idyllic holicady on its long beaches and fun-packed funfair.
About the Artist
Vicki Brown completed a degree in Fine Art, specialising in black and white photography. After months of isolation and red light in the darkroom, she left for sunnier scenes, and spent the next six years living abroad - in Spain, Portugal, Ecuador, Panama and Uganda.
She learned to speak Spanish and Portuguese, dance rudimentary flamenco and salsa, whip up a fish and plantain stew on a open fire, and the fine art of barefoot jungle trekking.
Between travels she is based in London, UK, where she works as a graphic designer, travel writer, photographer and vegetable gardener.
